100% all of this. I also feel like Celine responded to that review with the assumption that the joke was about Lucy choosing a broke man over a rich man, but she entirely ignored the fact that Lucy also chose a broke man over HERSELF. Capitalism has colonized love because it first colonized us - we have to survive in this world so why would we make it harder for ourselves by adding an unnecessary financial dependent? That’s the more interesting angle in my opinion! To your point, whether she’d married the rich guy or rejected both of them, either alternative would’ve made her thesis more clear. The “love conquers all” ending is not a new idea…
there's just SO much to discuss with this movie, which might the only reason i appreciate it—at least it's giving us something to talk about! but i 100% agree with you, though interestingly enough it never felt like an option for lucy to pick neither man. that was another disappointing aspect...
Ok new development!! I just had dinner w a friend lol who has another theory: Past Lives, Materialists, and even Challengers (written by Song’s husband) all have a love triangle dynamic with one women choosing between two guys where one is rich/safe and the other is a struggling dreamer (artist/athlete). She was like…is this a trilogy…!!!
My husband also loves halal food but thank god he didn't propose to me with chicken over rice in tow. The ending left me with a big ole eye-roll and an audible "gimme a break"
I didn't see this movie because I knew it would be bad, but judging from the fair critiques, this is what happens when an "indie darling" filmmaker gets the Hollywood machine behind them, for better budget and unfortunately for worse art.
Also, I didn't like Past Lives because I prefer movies where things occur, but also judging by THAT film, I'm SURE it was the Hollywood studios that pushed for the "love wins" ending despite the ???? these characters' couples therapist will likely have to parse through with them.

wait..... is this a trilogy!!!
I agree! Also I was bothered on how they handled the subplot where Lucy's client was sexually assaulted and stalked.
so incredibly out of left field and mishandled!
Totally agree - it’s wild how Past Lives landed w/ such subtlety, and this one just didn’t connect in the way it was supposed to
totally missed the mark imo

that was exactly my reaction!! gimme a break!! if my husband proposed over chicken with rice, i would probably walk away...
these men get away with enough as it is. sheesh.
loved discussing this with you at dinner ln and loved reading your words on it!
